The Prescott Hiking Club is located in Prescott, Arizona. Hikes are offered for all ability levels several days per week; we also have monthly camping trips, and periodic picnics and parties. Members live in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and other Central Yavapai County areas. Dues are $5 per household, annually. Membership is open to anyone interested.

The Club is informally structured; the only officer is the club treasurer. Club rules are:

1) Never leave a hiker behind.
2) Leaders wait for others at trail junctions.
3) Members should hike with the group appropriate for their speed.

To join the club, please print this form or simply join us for a trial hike first.

Special Events & Announcements

 Driver Reimbursement

PHC has been paying drivers on trips of more than 80 miles round trip five cents a mile.

  • Because of the skyrocketing costs of gasoline, driver reimbursements have been changed as follows:

  • For trips of less than 20 miles round trip, each rider will pay the driver $1.

  • For trips longer than 20 miles round trip, each rider will pay the driver 10 cents per mile.

  • Mileage will no longer be included in the hike schedule. Each driver will be responsible for recording the trip distance.

These changes apply to both scheduled Tuesday hikes and regular Thursday and Saturday hikes.

Changes are effective at the start of June.

 Treasury

Aluminum prices have increased quite a lot in recent months, and because of PHC member’s diligence in collecting cans, the club treasury is in great shape—we have more than $1,000 in the treasury. Club dues will remain at $5 per household for the foreseeable future.

PHC will provide a barbeque and drinks. Please bring a salad, side dish, or dessert, as well as your own cutlery and a chair. For information, call Lynda Jerome on 772-1340 or Lois Eckman on 708-9217. Hike starts at 8:30.

Note: the picnic, serendipitously, coincides with the September campout!

Scheduled Fast Hike Changes

Over the past several years, the Prescott Hiking Club has had scheduled hikes on the weekends, and regular hikes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Scheduled hikes have a set destination and leave from various locations around the area, while the destination for regular hikes is decided on the day, and they always leave from the American Home parking lot in Prescott.

At the May planning meeting, attendees voted to change the scheduled hikes from Saturdays to Tuesdays to avoid conflicts with numerous other events around the Tri-City area on Saturdays. Starting in June, regular club hikes will be on Thursdays and Saturdays, and scheduled hikes will be on Tuesdays. This schedule change is for Fast Hikes only.

Easy Hike Changes

The easy hike group has dwindled nearly to non-existence over the past year. At the planning meeting a new format for Easy Hikes proposed by Tom Swinford was approved:

  • All hikes will be five miles of less.

  • Hikes will always be at same three locations:  Lynx Lake (Tuesdays), Granite Basin (Thursdays), and Williamson Valley Mint Wash (Saturdays)

  • All hikes will leave from the appropriate trailhead parking area, NOT from the American Home parking lot.

  • No lunches will be required as all three hikes should be about two hours duration.

  • Hikes will be at a measured pace, but never faster than the slowest hiker.

  • There will be no designated hike leader, and the only decision will be to hike clockwise or counter clockwise.

The advantages of this new agenda are:

  • Retains the social and safety advantages of hiking as a group instead of solo hiking.

  • Eliminates the uncertainty of where and when to hike. Also eliminates the unknown regarding terrain, distance, etc.

  • Five mile hikes will always be five or less miles; they will never end up as six, eight, or 10 mile hikes.

  • And hopefully, it will encourage more hikers to hit the trails!
