December Planning Meeting News

Treasurer’s Report: As of December 3, we have $1252.92 in the club account. The amount will increase when renewals for next year are deposited. $400 was donated to the City of Prescott Over-the-Hill Gang for trail maintenance tools. The group voted to spend $150 on food for the Holiday party to add to the potluck, as last year food ran low before everyone was through the line.

Club News: As gasoline prices have fallen under $3/gallon, the rate for drivers will drop to 7¢/mile.

The planning meeting attendees voted to move the general club hike start times in April and October to 8:00 AM from 9:00 AM. Moderate/strenuous hike leaders still have the option to have an earlier start time if needed and start times are always published in the weekly Moderate/Strenous Hikes e-mail.

Apache Lake Campout, Arizona
March 8-11, Sunday-Wednesday

The host is Joanne Polayes

I plan to drive via Payson to Roosevelt Lake on Hwy 188, then to the northeast end of the Apache Trail/Hwy 88. Camping will be at the Burnt Corral campground or the nearby Upper Burnt Corral campsite. There will be one day of kayaking upstream to Roosevelt Dam (this section is narrow and windy), one day of kayaking downstream toward Davis Wash, and one full-day hike from the Reavis Trail #109 toward Castle Dome and Windy Pass. The order will depend largely on the wind. There are other day-hiking opportunities, mainly along little-traveled dirt roads from the campground. Let me know if you are interested in coming. It is a beautiful area and the perfect time of year to visit with the desert in bloom and pleasant temperatures. Both the kayaking and hiking should be great!

Pine Grove Campout, near Flagstaff,

May 18-22, Monday-Friday
Pine Grove NF Campground

Hosts are Jim and Val Perry or 928-458-5058

Pine Grove Campground is 18 miles southeast of Flagstaff on Lake Mary Road. There are 46 sites. Sites are $22 per night ($11 with Geezer Pass). The campground has flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, free dump station. Some sites may be reserved online at or call 1-877-444-6777.

Day hikers can come up from Prescott for any of the hikes.

More details will be sent closer to the campout date.
